The Bronx’s own Mario’s is the only New York City area restaurant to win an America’s Regional Classics 2000 James Beard/Bertolli Olive Oil Restaurant Award.


Congratulations to Joseph Migliucci and his mother – Mama Rose--and the entire family. For five generations, since 1919, they have been preparing and serving fresh, robust Neapolitan style food.


Bill O’Shaughnessy of Whitney Radio, WVOX-AM and WRTN-FM, calls the award a long overdue tribute .”


The James Beard Foundation Awards have become, since their inception in 1990, among the highest honors awarded to fine food and beverage professionals. More than 60 awards are given, but only 8 Regional Classic Restaurant Awards were selected in 2000, and Mario’s has been given one of the 8.


The selection was made by a 17-member committee of leading food editors and restaurant critics, recognizing Mario’s as a “restaurant with timeless appeal, beloved in its region for quality food that reflects the history and character of its community.”

A Family Affair
Mr. Migliucci told us that his family had entered the restaurant field more than 80 years ago, by way of Cairo. "My grandparents left Naples with my father in the early 1900's and opened the first Italian restaurant ever to open in Egypt," he said. "It was a success but my father became restless and decided to come to America. When my grandfather died, my grandmother came too and the three of us opened Mario's on the same site where it stands today. It was much smaller, of course, and I was very little. I remember I had to stand on Coca-Cola boxes in the kitchen to make pizza.
